Dr. Gary R. Bertoline is a Distinguished Professor of Engineering Technology and Computer & Information Technology at Purdue University. He earned his PhD at The Ohio State University and was on the faculty in the College of Engineering for 3 years before coming to Purdue University in 1990.
He is currently the PI on an NSF grant and on research leave to work on the project. Gary also is a leader in Transformative Education 2.0, an effort to make Purdue University the most innovative residential learning program in the US among large research universities.
He co-founded the Indiana Next Generation Manufacturing Competitiveness Center (IN-MaC) and the Polytechnic Institute at Purdue University while serving as Dean. As Dean, he led the development of the Polytechnic initiative at Purdue, which was a major effort to transform the learning experience of students to better prepare graduates for life and work in the digital age using high-impact educational practices. Gary is the visionary leader for the Purdue Polytechnic High Schools located in Indianapolis and South Bend, IN, with more schools planned.
He has authored and co-authored seven textbooks in the areas of computer-aided design and engineering design graphics, with one, Fundamentals of 3D Solid Modeling and Graphics Communications, currently in its 7th edition. Gary’s research interests include XR applications and STEM education.
Gary currently is PI for an NSF grant in collaboration with the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE). This grant will develop a curriculum framework for an innovative, adaptive, robust, diverse, and inclusive engineering education model relevant to the 21st century.
