A team of Purdue University students will appear in the series premiere of "Cast in Steel." The long-form competitive series debuts on YouTube on Thursday, July 9, at 8 p.m. Eastern.
The Steel Founders' Society of America produces the national manufacturing competition. The first season follows university teams-including Purdue's team, "Hammer Down"-as they design, cast, manufacture, and test historically inspired steel products. The inaugural challenge required students to create a replica of George Washington's sword.
The series documents the students learning metal casting and manufacturing techniques to complete the difficult project. Viewers will watch the team navigate the engineering process and build community along the way.
The multidisciplinary roster includes students from Purdue Polytechnic, the College of Engineering, and the College of Liberal Arts. Materials engineering student Levi Dickson served as the team lead. He worked alongside mechanical engineering technology students Henning Chu, Kennon Scott and MacGyver Cottrell. The team also included mechanical engineering students Jonathan Antonov and Jordan Brookenthal, materials science and engineering student Jack Herrema, and industrial design student Liliane Belliveau.
Several faculty members and student leaders advised the group. Xiaoming Wang, a professor in the School of Engineering Technology, supported the team alongside former Purdue professor Milan Rakita. Nicholas Jreisat guided the students through his role as chairperson of the Purdue Casting Club.
Viewers can watch the premiere and follow the team's journey on the official Cast in Steel YouTube channel.
