Team 11 - Smart Thermostat

Chakolas is embarking on an innovative venture to develop a new generation of smart thermostat systems. This initiative seeks to transcend the traditional functionalities of standard thermostats, which typically maintain a user-defined target temperature. Recognizing that human comfort is a multidimensional aspect influenced not just by temperature but also by factors like humidity and airflow, Chakolas is committed to redefining indoor climate control. The essence of this project lies in designing, building, and rigorously evaluating a range of control algorithms.

Team 10

Most AR sandboxes available are either rented or one-off builds. A sandbox that is easy and cheap to build while incorporating user friendly features like portability and safety measures for children will promote more use in interactive education.

Purdue Senior Capstone Team 6

We designed a Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) sensor to deliver precise real-time positional feedback and improved measurement accuracy in surgical applications. Testing and calibration were conducted using a mechanical test rig constructed from 80/20 aluminum rails and 3D-printed parts the team designed. A breadboard circuit solution was implemented to eliminate noise and enhance measurement stability, while an aluminum casing, machined using CAM, ensured compliance with sterilization and performance standards.

Portable Healthcare Monitor

This project is designed to analyze possible causes of keel-bone-deformation, or KBD, repeated stress injuries to the keel bones of chickens. KBD in commercial chicken farming leads to both ethical and economical concerns. To do this the team designed a small lightweight sensing unit to be used to collect data about chickens and their environments.

Knowledge Retention/Training

The primary objective of Project 13 'Knowledge Retention' is multifaceted: firstly, addressing the imminent challenge of safeguarding technical expertise as experienced employees approach retirement age, and secondly, exploring innovative methods to impart this knowledge effectively to newer, less experienced technicians. In response to these challenges, our project incorporates a groundbreaking approach by integrating a sophisticated chatbot powered by ChatGPT, directly connected to Vuzix glasses.

Engineering For Good

Through the GoBabyGo program, that was established by Dr. Cole Galloway (University of Delaware), we will be working to modify kid’s battery powered toys to be used by kids as a low-cost powered wheelchair. We are modifying kid’s battery powered toys to be wheelchairs because there are more than 1.5 million children just in the United States that have trouble with mobility. There are wheelchairs that are made for children, but they can cost up to $25,000 and most of the time are not covered by insurance until the children are the age of five.

Endress & Hauser Teaching Cart

The Intelligent Process Control Cart (IPCC) project, in collaboration with Purdue Polytechnic School of Engineering Technology (SoET) Smart Manufacturing Lab, Endress + Hauser, and Rockwell Automation, seeks to create a teaching tool for students. By simulating real-world process flow systems and integrating advanced sensors as well as AI, the IPCC aims to provide students with hands-on experience in process automation and data-driven decision-making. This would make it possible for different classes to utilize the IPCC for lab sessions.

Team 14 - Subaru of Indiana Automotive

Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) utilizes a ticket system to manage and resolve IT related issues and requests. Associates who require assistance with IT related needs go to a ServiceNow powered website which allows them to create incident tickets, application requests, and hardware requests. The ticket flow is so that necessary approvals are made, and ticket is routed to the appropriate group for fulfillment. Service Level Agreements (SLA’s) are used to define accepted time limits for resolutions between the IT department and associates.
