The US Department of Defense, via the 2018 Digital Engineering Strategy, is transforming its engineering practices to digital engineering, incorporating technological innovations into an integrated, digital, model-based approach.  Simultaneously, industry and academia continue to pace novel methods of digital engineering applications to improve processes and integration of PLM tenets.  This symposium will utilize a case study from Naval Special Warfare Group FOUR (NSWG-4) as a basis for observation and discussion, towards a greater understanding of how digital engineering practices can improve organizational results related to capital assets.

This presentation will discuss current Requirement and Sustainment related challenges regarding DE transformation within NSW.  It will address such questions as: How does NSW currently describe Engineer to Order (ETO) requirements?  What infrastructure currently exists to exploit/utilize data from ETO platforms for modification/sustainment?  How are DE tools being utilized now, and what are the current plans for DE tool application in NSW?  How might DE tools enhance sustainment of the NSW family of craft?

A Case Study in Big Iron: Mining Vehicles, Construction Equipment, and DE/PLM

Mining and construction vehicles have always presented a unique application for engineer-to-order operations, and in many cases, a challenging application for digital engineering and PLM methods and tools. The presentation will illustrate an alternate application of these principles compared to a defense-oriented vehicle, yet many of the concepts will be applicable.

DE Implementation: Ongoing Research Efforts

This presentation will focus on the DE technologies and processes currently being researched by Academia for ‘like’ platforms to those in the DoD.  It will describe different DE tenet integration techniques that improve PLM functions.  It will address such questions as: What has research indicated regarding OEM PLM implementation? What are some organizational/process changes that need to occur to improve PLM between ETO OEMs and customers?  What types of data should be included in a requirement for ETO contracting bids?

What data types should be collected to improve PLM of capital platforms? How frequently should data be collected and why?  How can an organization best formulate an engagement plan for PLM between the OEM and customer?
