In order to commission and earn your “butter bars” (Second Lieutenant rank), you must successfully earn a degree. While cadets are encouraged to prioritize academics, Det 220 also offers a variety of extracurricular activities. In addition to the clubs/organizations listed below, cadets are regularly exposed to additional events which are designed to provide further insight into life as an Air Force or Space Force officer. Some of these opportunities include, but are not limited to: Career Nights, guest speakers, incentive flights, formal military dinners, base tours or National Museum of the United States Air Force (NMUSAF) visits.

Arnold Air Society is a national, professional, honorary, service organization comprised of Air Force and Space Force ROTC cadets. Its mission is to build strong officers. The Iven C. Kincheloe Squadron, at Purdue, focuses on leadership development by expanding upon the knowledge and skills learned in ROTC. Members also participate in community service projects.

Silver Wings is a national, professional organization dedicated to creating proactive, knowledgeable and effective civic leaders through community service and education about national defense. It is a collegiate organization comprised of both students and ROTC cadets/midshipmen.

The Lt Col Virgil “Gus” Grissom i5 Space Squadron, at Purdue, is part of national, student organization that operates in conjunction with Space Training and Readiness Command (STARCOM.) Comprised of both students and ROTC cadets interested in pursuing careers in the United States Space Force (USSF), its mission is to produce educated and inspired leaders who are prepared to define the character of warfighting in space. i5 Space also boasts research partnerships with USSF and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO.)

The Honor Guard is a military ceremonial unit responsible for providing honors at ceremonies and other official events. They also fulfill the role of a Color Guard, presenting the colors (flags) during sporting events on campus.
